R&D tax relief

TAX RELIEF FOR GROUND-BREAKING PROJECTS

Is your business carrying out new, innovative and challenging work? You could be eligible for research and development (R&D) tax relief – and you don’t have to be a scientist to claim it.

R&D tax relief is available for businesses undertaking innovative work in a field of science or technology. But even if your business’s main trade isn’t based in those fields, you could still qualify if you’re developing or improving products, recipes, processes or services.

There are two different types of R&D tax relief, which you can claim depending on the size of your business.

SME R&D relief is available to small and medium-sized businesses, and if you qualify for it, you’ll be able to deduct more than double the amount of your qualifying costs from your profit before tax.

The other type of relief is the research and development expenditure credit (RDEC). This offers a tax credit of more than 10% of your company’s qualifying R&D expenditure, providing a significant boost to your cashflow.

Either relief is hugely valuable to any business carrying out groundbreaking work, but to qualify, you need to show how your project meets the HMRC definition of R&D.

That’s where we can help, offering an expert opinion on whether your project is likely to qualify, and supporting you throughout the process of applying to HMRC.
